Instagrams New Screen Time Tool

With society nowadays it is almost merely impossible to not be glued to your phone especially with applications like Instagram. As a college student in today's society, I know that I find myself scrolling through my feed for long increments of time sometimes when I am bored. It feels like I'm always on sometimes out of curiosity, boredom, or simply just to see what my friends are doing or what they have done during the week or weekend. I don't know about you guys but when I find myself scrolling for too long I want to just kick myself or shake myself and say "get it together".

The other day I updated my Instagram and noticed that they had added a new feature called "screen time". With this tool, you can see how many hours or minutes a day you are scrolling through your feed. I was so shocked when I saw that my screen time was 85 minutes. I was so mad at myself because I didn't even realize  I was using Instagram that much. I think that this new tool is super useful and helpful not only for me but for every young individual who finds them scrolling through Instagram too much. This is raw and it is real it helps users be much more mindful of just how much time they are spending on this platform.
What is really awesome about this update is that it allows you to set a time limit. With this time limit you will receive a notification from Instagram saying that you have crossed the time limit that you have set yourself. But with this, it is up to you if you are ready to cut your Instagram use there. In my eyes, I think that this is a great way for social media to teach people that being always on is not a good thing. Hopefully, it will teach other social media platforms to find savvy ways to help users cut back on screen time

  1. I really enjoyed this post, I feel like as a society we have become so consumed with social media that at times it's extremely hard to distance ourselves from it. I didn't realize how much time I truly spent on my phone till I had someone tell me I spent too much time being on my phone for no reason. I think the reason why were so into our phones is because there is always something new to see, you can go from app to app and always find something new, which is rather disturbing. Personally I find this instagram update very useful for people who feel like they spend to much time on the app. I think instagram is finally realizing that their popularity is consuming many peoples lives. Hopefully other social media apps will follow suit and create features like this to warn people about their usage of the app. I also think this feature will help many people that they need to put their phones down and just enjoy life.
